We do all sorts of things as a unit. At our weekly meetings we either work in our Patrols on our Go For
Its
, or we have a unit activity where we all come together.  We do such a huge range of activities
that it would be impossible to describe here!

Sometimes we have
themed evenings, such as an International theme or last year's Indoor Fireworks
Night. We do a lot of
cooking (we love to eat!) often play games, make things and always learn
something new about ourselves or our world. Recently we've been doing some activities from a
resource called 'Right Now' where we have been thinking a lot about our
Human Rights.

We often do things away from our usual meeting place, such as
swimming, ice-skating in Plymouth,
cook-outs and hiking.  Every Spring, we have the chance to go to our local PGL centre, Barton Hall,
where we meet Guides from all over the County for a really busy
activity day where we get to do all
sorts of things, like
quad-biking, raft building, zip wire and loads more!

At Christmas time we sing
carols for the residents of a local care home. We also represent Girlguiding
in the District at local events, such as
Remembrance Day, and the recent Ashburn River Festival.

We also have several
residential events a year, ranging from one-night sleepovers to week-long
camps. We go camping at least once a year, and this is usually in the summer holidays. We normally
make it a joint camp by taking Guides from 3rd Newton Abbot (SA) Guide Unit (who meet in a
bigger town called Newton Abbot which is 15 minutes away from us) and their Leaders with us. We
tend to try and alternate our camps, by going to our County Campsite every two years, and
somewhere further away on the years inbetween.

The legendary Cabell Tomb
We meet in Buckfastleigh, which is a small market town in Devon, in the very Southwest
of England. Buckfastleigh lies just off of the A38, on the edge of Dartmoor National Park
and has a population of approximately 5000. The town was originally on the old Exeter to
Plymouth road, and is close to the River Dart. It is famous for its ruined Holy Trinity Church,
which is the source of many myths and legends, including the Hound of the Baskervilles.

Click here:                                  for a map of Buckfastleigh. You can zoom in and out to
see whereabouts we are.

Our members mostly come from Buckfastleigh and the nearby town, Ashburton. We do
have some, however, who live in slightly more remote places, such as
Widecombe-in-the-Moor and Woodland.

The History of Buckfastleigh Guide Company

1927 - Buckfastleigh Guide Company was formed and meetings were held in the National Sunday School Room in Chapel
Street (now the Youth Club).

1943 - The Guide company closed.

1962 - The company was reopened in the Congregational Church by Mrs Long, the Minister's wife (this building is now the
John Loosemore Centre). At this time Buckfastleigh Guides were part of the Totnes District.
1967 - The company moved again, this time to Ashburton Secondary School, where it became part of the Ashburton
Guiding District.

1969 - The company moved back to Buckfastleigh and met in the Primary School. Mrs Rosemary Howell (from Spitchwick
Estate in those days) was the leader. She then became Devon County Commissioner, and now lives at Lukesland,
Ivybridge.

1993 - Meetings were held in the Methodist Church Hall while the Primary School was being redesigned, but it was
decided that the unit would remain meeting there.

80 years on from that first meeting, the unit is still going strong!
The Buckfastleigh Guide Company was first formed in 1927. Today, in
February 2009, 1st Buckfastleigh Guide Unit has 30 Guides in 6 patrols, 3 Adult
Leaders, 2 Young Leaders and 1 Unit Helper. We are a very diverse bunch -
with a huge range of talents, skills and experience between us!

Keep on scrolling to find out all about us!
As a unit we came up with a list of guidelines that we all agree to follow.
A copy of these guidelines is displayed in our hall, and we all have our own copy to take home with us.

Between us we wear a variety of different uniform tops,
but it's important that we are always in official Guide
uniform for meetings and events. However, one thing
that we all wear with pride is our unit neckerchief! We
chose ours to be turquoise with a white border.
